What is scud running?

Scud running is a term used in aviation to describe flying at low altitudes, often below regulatory minimums, without proper navigation or communication procedures. This type of flying is considered dangerous and risky as it increases the likelihood of colliding with terrain, obstacles, or other aircraft.

Pilots who engage in scud running typically do so when weather conditions make it difficult or impossible to fly at higher altitudes, such as during low visibility, strong winds, or storms. This behavior is often prompted by time pressure, lack of experience, or overconfidence in one's flying abilities.

Scud running is illegal and goes against aviation regulations, as it endangers both the pilot and others in the air and on the ground. It is strongly discouraged and pilots are advised to always follow proper safety protocols and regulations when flying.
